Paper Flag Collages:
These works were the beginning of most of the colorful paintings and nylon collages that followed that year. The works are imaginary flags that can stand in for new nations, or new groups of people. As an immigrant to America, this idea is emotionally relevant since when I consider the American Flag, it does not seem to encompass someone like me.
In addition, this was also my Covid Project during the shutdown. I sat down to recreate a project I had started a long time ago before coming to America. When I was young, I had Paperas (Mumps) and the project that I was sent home with. Since you cannot be around other people, I sat at home with my cheeks wrapped up, bunny ears and all. My sick project was to redesign the Guatemalan Flag and redesign the National Soccer Kit. I do not recall the reason for this project, I must have been a kid that was really into soccer. It could also stem from being the Abanderado (Flag Bearer). Which is an honor bestowed to kids with good grades. Ha!
